Americans suffering from depression prefer to take drugs, rather than psychotherapy. A recent poll showed that nearly 80 percent of patients use pills to treat depression.

The most popular group of drugs for depression are so-called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI), which include "Prozac". Americans are less likely to use new drugs for depression, because they are concerned about side effects.

Experts say that therapy is not less effective than medication. Participating in the study patients reported that their condition after seven sessions of psychotherapy improved as much as when taking medicines.
